How much insulation do I need in my walls?

Betsy,
Your walls should be as full as possible with insulation. Since walls are usually only 3.5 or 5.5 inches thick, the insulation you can get into them is limited by their thickness and the limitation of adding insulation to walls already built and sometime finished. A home performance contractor or experienced insulation contractor can help you determine the potential for improving them.
